Overcharged and then had to wait 2 weeks for refund
I rented a car at the DFW airport for 4 days, my reservation said it would be $248.40. I turned the vehicle in, no damage, I received the receipt and they charged me $989!
I notified them via email, was asked to provide the original email confirmation, which I did immediately. I then waited, several days later, I followed up, was asked again to provide the email, which I did. They said it would take 7 business days. At day 10, then they asked me AGAIN for this information even though in every email they sent back to me they said they had it.
I finally called the customer service number and was immediately helped. Or at least that's what they said they were doing.
Now I have to wait 3-5 days for my $735 refund. Beware and if you do rent with them, make sure you save every email confirmation with the price you were quoted, you likely will need it.
User's recommendation: Go with another rental company

I was quoted $300.
They told me it would be an extra $300 for taxes and fees.
Another $300 for being underage (I had to re-explain my age and have them look at my license in their hand to get this charge removed).
Another $300 deposit.
I was told they would charge me the $300 deposit now then settle up at the end. (I assumed that meant they'd charge me only $300 right then).
They gave me a bill for $600.
They took $900 out of my account.
Then they gave me a car with a dried flyer stuck to the windshield.
They will not give me my deposit back until days after my vacation, so my trip was essentially ruined.
Upon posting my review, Avis customer service contacted me. Outcome of contact by Avis customer service came out to condescending email letting me know they will email my receipt to me...so, no improvement on customer service or predatory business practices.

Verified Reviewer | North Charleston, South CarolinaResolved: HORRIBLE Customer Service
Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with apology.
It took over 2 hours being transferred and put on hold to get the charges moved to my corporate card. Despite correcting that charge, THE TOLL CHARGES WERE STILL APPLIED TO MY PERSONAL CREDIT CARD!
During my most recent trip, to Charleston, SC, I went to pick up my car, but my name was NOT listed on the board. When I went to the counter, the agent told me to "look on the board". After a bit of discussion, he finally accepted the fact that my name was NOT listed and told me which spot my car was in.
I should note at this point, the window tint in the FRONT driver and passenger window was more than twice as dark as the back window.
I could NOT see out those windows at night. This is not only dangerous, I've seen people get ticketed for such tinting.
When I turned in the car (on Saturday 12/9), there was NO AGENT checking in cars. I've never turned in a car at the airport where there was no agent checking the cars in... Because of my previous issues with billing from Avis, and no instructions where to leave the car (without anyone to check it in) I wanted a receipt BEFORE I just left the car.
so I went to the counter in the return area.
The agent categorically REFUSED to give me a receipt, saying that "You'll get a receipt via email in 20 minutes). When I told him what stall that I left the car in, he said "You can't leave it there." One agent moved the car, but the agent at the counter REPEATEDLY REFUSED to process the return and give me a receipt, insisting "You will get a receipt by email in 20 minutes"
FIVE days later, I still had NO RECEIPT. I spent over 4 hours on the phone, getting the run around as I tried to get my receipt.
I did finally get a receipt but had to waste a lot of time doing so.
AVIS used to have the motto "We try harder"... they need to change it to "We don't give a damn!"
- Super cheap
- Worst service ever

Verified Reviewer | Río Segundo, AlajuelaTerrible customer service
I rented a vehicle online for use in Costa Rica. We did not arrive until after 9 pm CST.
We waited 1520 minutes outside the airport for someone to pick us to take us the Avis rent a car location even though website states airport location. Upon arrival, we were immediately told that we required a 4x4 vehicle. I let the rep know that we did not require a 4x4 vehicle, and he stated yes, you are going to the green mountains and you must have a 4x4. After several minutes and many time-outs on my part I told him we are only renting an economy car, and then he started with all different types of insurance that we must have.
This rep was rude, obnoxious and scared me to drive. From a bill of $215 this rep wanted to rent me a vehicle for almost $700. We left with a small vehicle and I did not want to drive the car because he also told me that the police were going to confiscate the car if I was driving in an area I was not supposed to drive a small vehicle and if I was not supposed to be driving on that day. He also wanted to charge us $70 with the option to return car on empty and $20 for leaving the car at the airport, which is the location they advertise their office location.
I drove the car for a total of 61 miles within a 5-day span. If you have ever been to Costa Rica that is not far. I have paid over $350 for 61 miles.
I contacted customer service and this was the response: the customer was provided with a Nissan Versa, and it is not appropriate for a sedan vehicle to be used for mountainous areas and non-National routes as it will damage vehicle. We also attach the contract signed by client.
I rented the Nissan Versa that's why they provided me with it, it was not their decision. What was the purpose of attaching the contract, I was aware of what I signed, and we had no intention of driving in the mountains. This was also told to the rep when he was trying to get us to rent a 4x4 vehicle. Why did he assume?
Why can he not apologize? Cant Avis see that this vehicle was not driven? This rep scared me.
We ended up paying double because we had to be shuttled all over due to the rudeness and false accusations of this Avis rep. I should be reimbursed for this reps actions.

Verified ReviewerTerrible Experience with Avis Car Rental through Uber Program
I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the car rental experience I had with Avis through Uber's car rental program. The ordeal began when I pointed out scratches on the vehicle to the aggressively rude franchise owner during check-in.
The car's interior was not only dirty but had a foul smell that made the rental uncomfortable.
When I contacted Avis customer service to document the issues, the agent disregarded my concerns. Upon returning the vehicle, the franchise owner warned me about complaining, and to my dismay, a hold was placed on my bank card for three weeks. Shockingly, on June 9th, 22nd, and July 4th, I was charged three times in the amount of $2415.96.
The subsequent chaos involved my bank initiating a dispute without my knowledge, leading to account closure in October, and even more of a financial hardship. Despite making over 112 calls to Avis since November to resolve the issue, I've received no refund.
A billing transfer has caused additional charges, and the lack of customer care and communication is appalling.
Avis's disregard for customer satisfaction and the numerous unresolved issues have left me frustrated and disheartened. The lack of responsiveness from Avis, coupled with their poor customer service, reflects a company that seems indifferent to customer concerns.
Preferred solution: Full refund

Verified Buyer | Ashburn, VirginiaUnacceptable Experience with Avis Rental Car - Immediate Action Required
I am writing this letter to express my deep concern and frustration regarding a recent experience I had with your Avis rental car service. I believe it is imperative for you to be aware of the unacceptable behavior I encountered at your establishment.
On 8/19/23 I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a staff member named Benny at your location.
To say that my encounter with him was distressing would be an understatement. Not only did he act in an unprofessional and aggressive manner, but he also attempted to coerce me into making an illicit payment in cash, under the table, in order to secure my rental vehicle.
Benny's insistence that I provide him with cash, as well as his mention of a supposed requirement to involve his associate at Ace, Shamar, immediately raised red flags for me. It became clear to me that this was nothing short of a scam, designed to manipulate customers into making unauthorized payments. As a responsible consumer, I was taken aback by such unethical practices.
Furthermore, I am extremely concerned about the security of my personal and financial information.
Benny and his accomplice passed around my debit card without my consent, putting my privacy at risk. This behavior is not only disrespectful but also highly inappropriate and illegal. I am appalled that such practices are being allowed to persist within your establishment.
To make matters worse, the rental agreement I was provided with had glaring errors, further adding to the growing list of issues I faced during this ordeal. It is evident that there was a complete lack of attention to detail and professionalism in preparing this contract.
I expect a resolution to these issues as soon as possible.
I demand a formal investigation into the actions of Benny and his accomplice, as well as a review of your company's hiring and training practices to prevent such incidents from happening again. Additionally, I request that my rental agreement be amended to accurately reflect the terms of our agreement.
If I do not receive a satisfactory response and appropriate actions are not taken to address these concerns, I will have no choice but to escalate the matter further by involving relevant consumer protection agencies and posting about my experience on social media platforms. As I took pictures of both of them and have a video of Shamar denying his involvement, Benny left the counter before I could confront him on video but I do have a picture. I believe that transparency and accountability are essential for any reputable business, and I hope that Avis will demonstrate these values in its response to this situation.
I eagerly await your prompt response and resolution to this matter.
As I am concerned as to what to expect when I return my vehicle on Sunday.
Benny also informed me that the insurance I purchased online would not cover my vehicle, and threatened me not to tell anyone about this situation, so I am completely uncomfortable with my rental at this point. I trust that you will take these issues seriously and work to restore my confidence in Avis as a reliable and reputable rental car service.

You state you left with a sedan despite the warning about needing a 4x4 in the mountains. So why the $500 loss claim?
You also claim you paid double because you ended up being shuttled places. Were these shuttle expenses not planned ahead of time or did you use them because of the warning about using a sedan in the mountains?
It sounds like you are mad because you got forewarned about driving in the mountains and couldn’t claim ignorance after the fact. Do better.
No, I never planned to go to the mountains and we did not go. This rep was trying to get us to rent a 4x4 that we did not need.
We did not plan on getting shuttled to and from places because this is what the car was for. So it was double we paid.
We paid for the car and then we had to pay to get shuttled and taxied to places. The only ignorance was that I did not leave AVIS.
If you rented the car, why didn’t you use it? Why would you let it sit there and pay for shuttles?
He told me that the police were going to confiscate the car if I was driving in an area I was not supposed to drive a small vehicle and if I was not supposed to be driving on that day. When I repeatedly asked him which days were we not supposed to drive and in which areas he looked at me and did not respond.
For this reason I did not want to drive the vehicle. I do not want to get arrested in a foreign country not even in a country I reside in.
